If you have more than one dog, you know that “same household” doesn’t mean “same personality.” One dog may spend most of the afternoon close to the house. Another wants to check out every corner of the yard. One catches on to a new routine almost immediately. The other needs a little more time. Questions we hear often from families with multiple dogs include:
Can one hidden dog fence work for all of them?
Yes. A DogWatch® Hidden Fence can work with multiple dogs on the same property. They share the same yard boundary, but each dog wears their own receiver collar, which can be adjusted for that individual dog. Your dogs don’t have to be the same size, breed, age, or personality to use the same system.
How does one Hidden Fence work for multiple dogs?
The boundary is installed around the part of the yard you want your dogs to use. Each dog then wears their own DogWatch receiver collar and learns where that boundary is. You don’t need a separate underground fence for every dog. They can all use the same boundary while their receiver settings are adjusted individually. So if one dog is smaller, more sensitive, or simply responds differently than the others, the system can be set up with that in mind.
Does each dog need their own receiver collar?
Yes. Each dog needs their own receiver collar. That’s what allows the setup to work for dogs who may be very different from each other. One dog may respond well at one setting, while another needs something different. And size doesn’t tell the whole story. Two dogs that are similar in size may still react very differently when they’re learning the boundary. Having a separate receiver for each dog means the settings can be chosen for the dog wearing it.
Can small and large dogs use the same Hidden Fence?
Absolutely. A small dog and a large dog can share the same hidden fence. So can an older dog who prefers a slow walk around the yard and a younger dog who seems to be everywhere at once. They learn the same boundary, but their receiver settings don’t have to be identical. There’s no need to divide the yard or install a second hidden fence just because the dogs are different.
Why it helps to train each dog separately
Even if your dogs usually do everything together, it’s better to give each one their own time to learn the boundary. Training separately means fewer distractions, and it makes it easier to see how each dog is responding. One may understand the flags and warning signal quickly. Another may need a few extra sessions. That’s fine, they don’t have to learn at exactly the same pace. What matters is that each dog understands where the boundary is before you expect them to use the yard together.
What if you bring home another dog later?
Maybe you had one dog when your DogWatch fence was installed and have since added another one. You usually don’t need to start over. A compatible receiver can be added for the new dog, and that dog can learn the boundary that’s already in place. DogWatch of Northwest Indiana also offers New Dog Training for existing customers who add another dog to the family. Even if your first dog has known the boundary for years, the newcomer still needs to learn it for themselves.
Does having multiple dogs affect the cost?
There is still one main hidden fence system, but every dog needs their own receiver collar, so the number of dogs can affect the overall cost. The yard itself is another factor. Property size and layout, driveway crossings, and any areas you want your dogs to stay out of can all affect the final setup. That’s why an in-yard estimate is helpful. It gives you a much clearer idea of what you actually need based on your property and your dogs.
Is a Hidden Fence a Good Fit for a Multi-Dog Home?
For many families with more than one dog, a hidden fence is a practical way to give everyone room to enjoy the yard. The dogs share one boundary, but each can have receiver settings and training that fit them individually. If you have two dogs, three dogs, or another one may be joining the family soon, DogWatch of Northwest Indiana can help you find the right setup for your property and your pets.
